PCCY…We’re Here to Help

“Take it or leave it.” That’s the ultimatum Florence*, a licensed practical nurse, was given when she raised concerns about risking her kids’ health.

For five years, Florence provided tender care to patients in an outpatient clinic.  When her center started focusing on COVID care, out of concern for her children, she asked to be transferred to another center.

Florence was forced to choose between her children’s health or her job.  She put her children first.  She’s a mom of two children who have underlying health conditions and was gravely concerned about bringing COVID into her home.

With no job, she had no health care for herself or her children.  She called our  HelpLine. Within minutes, she and her children were enrolled in Medicaid. “Being without healthcare was my main concern when I lost my job,” said Florence.  “PCCY’s Helpline Director Anjanette made it so easy for me and I’m grateful.”

The HelpLine helps parents sign up their kids for Medical Assistance and CHIP.  Each year, PCCY gets children covered so kids can get check-ups, shots, glasses, dental care, asthma care, etc.  We help for free, over the phone, and in many languages.  We also suggest dentists, eye doctors, therapists, or other medical providers as needed.

Anjanette Perry and Mildred Mendez, the HelpLine Coordinators, are no substitute for the flaws in our nation’s health care policy that puts millions of families at risk, but for this family and hundreds more each year they close the gap.

Florence is just one example of how PCCY is making the lives of children and parents better in the vital these difficult times.

We need your help today so we can help more parents just like Florence.

The HelpLine fields 500 calls a year; your gift of $10 (or $25 or $50) for each call we take will go a long way.  A very generous supporter is matching dollar-for-dollar every Giving Tuesday donation up to $5,000 – your gift goes twice as far.

So please give today to make it easier for families to get the health coverage they need in these difficult times.  Thank you!
