2022 Advocates of the Year

Thanks to the caring vision of two municipal employees, Crandall JonesAmrinder Singh, thousands of Norristown’s youngest residents will live without the threat of lead paint poisoning. They spearheaded the ordinance unanimously adopted by the Council that requires rental properties, child care facilities, condemned properties, and properties for sale be certified lead-free.

Our City is a better place for kids because of Geneva Williams. A tireless Philadelphia parent activist, Geneva was our partner in getting the Youth Services Ombudsperson Office established. She lent her voice and persuaded lawmakers to take seriously the protection of children forced to live in institutions. She never stops advocating for children, especially for boys of color who are served by the mental health systems.

Nancy Thompson, Director of Jolly Toddlers Early Education Center, has dedicated her life to ensuring children in Bucks County and statewide have access to high-quality early childhood education. She has nurtured countless children in Jolly Toddlers’ forty years and leads her community to call on state and federal officials to invest in kids. Without fierce leaders like Nancy, the early learning sector simply wouldn’t have overcome the relentless challenges of the past two years.

The dynamic team of Penn Wood High School students and advisors – Jacob McCann, Lisa Asamoah, Paul Vandy, Susan Norton, and Trinity Giddings – told the world what was happening with Pennsylvania’s historical school funding trial in a weekly podcast, PENNding Funds. For four months, they tirelessly reported the firsthand consequences of unfair funding and inspired new education advocates to fight for education funding.
